At a meeting in Strangsmills N.S. on Sunday, December 3rd, 1950, it was decided to form a Parish Hurling Club and it was agreed to affiliate a Junior Hurling Team in 1951 Championship. At that initial meeting, officers were elected to run the Club for the coming year and they were as follows; President, Very Rev. W. Hennessey P.P.; Chairman, Rev B. Mullan, C.C.; Vice chairman, Sergeant Sammon; Secretary, Richard Rellis N.T.; Treasurer, Mr. McDevitt.
A further meeting was arranged for Kilmacow Boys N.S. on December 17th, where it was decided to affiliate a Junior Football team as well as to name the club- St. Senans Hurling and Football club, Kilmacow. Membership fees had been agreed at 2/6 at the initial meeting and it was proposed to call a General Meeting on December 31st in Kilmacow and the present membership would canvass the parish for more members in the following two weeks.
At the general meeting in December 31st, forty people attended and there was great enthuaism for the formation of the new hurling and football club. St. Senans was here to stay and although the club had its ups and downs over the years, it is very much alive this present day.
Kilmacow, of course, had a long and proud history of association with Gaelic Games previous to 1951. It was a football stronghold in the early days of the association. Seamus O Ceallaigh in his masterpiece, The Story of the GAA had to say: "Kilmacow were unfortunate that the abandonment of the Senior All Ireland Football Series in 1888 deprived them of what appeared certain honours". In the first half of the 20th century, Kilmacow and Dunkitt produced many fine Junior and Minor hurling teams and challenged strongly for championship honours on several occasions.
The 1956 Junior double winning team has been the most successful team the Club has produced. They later went on to contest three County Senior semi finals and could be termed unfortunate not to win one County Senior Championship.
For many years St. Patricks Football Club catered for all football interests in the Parish and St. Senans concentrating exclusively on hurling. In 1990 Kilmacow saw the amalgamation of the hurling and football clubs to become the Kilmacow hurling and football club. |
